Abstract

This article deals with a new symmetric multilevel inverter topology. These topology can synthesize seven level output voltage with lower device count as compared to conventional multilevel inverters. In the conventional inverters, minimum 12 switches are required to produce seven level output voltage. The major contribution of this work is to compare reduce switch multilevel topologies.  In this work four multilevel inverter structures are consider  with eight, seven, six and five switches. The structure III and IV gives 50 % reduction in switches and size comparing with conventional multilevel inverters which leads the maximum possible extent of reduction in switches. The multicarrier switching scheme is applied to the multilevel inverters for achieving the desired output voltage level. Comparisons of the results of various developed structures are presented to prove the merits of the modified structure multilevel inverter. The ability of producing desired voltage levels in modified structures are reconfirmed by experimental results using Spartan 3 field-programmable gate array
