Promoting Economic Development in Zimbabwe: Enhancing the Growth and Sustainability of Agricultural SMEs
Abstract
SMEs are the seedbed for economic development and poverty alleviation in developing
countries. Zimbabwean SMEs, particularly those in the agricultural sector, contribute greatly to promote
food security; hence, there is need to establish whether reengineering the SMEs will promote their
development. A quantitative research design was used to conduct a survey among a purposive sample of 380
agricultural SMEs in Zimbabwe to establish if there is a relationship between strategies to reengineer the
SMEs in the agricultural sector and economic development in Zimbabwe. It was confirmed that adoption of a
re-engineering strategy does indeed promote the growth of SMEs in the agricultural sector; thus, it is
recommended that the reengineering process should be used as a strategy to streamline agricultural SMEs
which will in turn contribute to economic development in Zimbabwe.
