A Need Analysis for Developing English Speaking Materials at Bosowa University

Abstract

This research was aimed to explore the students’ needs to develop English Speaking Materials in order to improve the students’ skill in speaking English. Need analysis is important to be carried out before developing the course teaching materials. This Research was conducted at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education in Bosowa University of Makassar. The participants of this research  were  fifteen Students at second semester and 4 English Lecturers. The descriptive qualitative data of this research was obtained by doing  guided interview to the participants.  The data obtained were about the students’ needs and the problems faced by the students during  the Spoken English Course. The result of this research  presented the students’ needs  which covered Learning Objectives in syllabus, The Topics of Materials, Learning Activity, Students’ Activeness, Speaking Materials, Lecturers’ roles and Students’ problems. It suggested that the lecturers should develop the learning materials for speaking skills based on the students’ needs.
