Abstract

The dust accumulation on the ceiling fan blade requires frequent cleaning which is both tiring
and bothersome. Furthermore, reaching a ceiling fan to clean has a risk of falling. Therefore, a mechanism is
designed and analyzed using Solidworks and fabricated using a 3-D printer. This mechanism is fitted onto a
conventional ceiling fan and tested. The results showed that the mechanism does not increase power
consumption significantly where the highest increase is only 0.001W. The testing of the mechanism's
cleaning ability utilized an image processing technique to gauge the amount of dust before and after a cycle
of the mechanism's operation. The results showed that up to 90% of the dust is removed from the ceiling fan
blade surface. Therefore, the proposed cleaning tool is able to keep the fan dust-free eliminating the need for
frequent fan cleaning.
