Developing English Teaching Materials for Journalistic Students at UIN Alauddin Makassar Based on Needs Analysis

Abstract

English teaching material is one of the fundamental elements influencing the teaching and learning process. In English learning atmosphere, the use of the appropriate English teaching material is a necessity to enhance the students’ English ability. This research aimed at finding out learning needs of the journalistic students at UIN Alauddin Makassar, Indonesia in learning English. This research employed research and development method (R and D) in two main steps; conducting a research to find out the students’ needs and then designing and developing a course based on needs analysis. The population of the research were a total number of the students of first semester of new academic year 2018/2019, lecturers and graduates of department of Journalism, Faculty of Dakwah and Communication, UIN Alauddin Makassar. The instruments employed were Questionnaires and interviews of Needs Analysis for the Students, lectures and graduates, and archives document. The data were analyzed by using score level: (1) the frequency score, (2) the importance score, (3) the difficulty score, and (4) the suitability score, and given a set of score from one to five. From the findings, it could be revealed that that the learning needs of journalistic students which cover four areas: success in study, success for getting job, mastery of English skills and mastery of certain newscast topics. Journalistic students at UIN Alauddin Makassar need to learn English in order  they can finish their study and find job easily after graduation, master English skills to support the success of their study and future carrier. They also need to learn  newscast  topics as preparation when working and having profession as journalists in the real world of journalism in the future.
