Quadratic Linearization Of Statcom Model

Abstract

— Flexible AC Transmission Systems(FACTS) controllers are used in power systems to enhance
power transmission capability and to introduce damping during power system transients. The design of
Statcom has been a subject of research for last few decades.. The dynamic equations describing Statcom are
nonlinear involving products of trigonometric functions of input and state variables.As the contollers like
PID controllers are linear, linearizing the Statcom equations also will make the control design easier.
Different techniques have been used to linearize the Statcom dynamic equations including exact
linearization which results in zero dynamics that needs to be stabilized. In this paper, considering operation
about an operating point, Statcom equations are reduced essentially to a quadratic form. The resulting
equation is quadratic linearized. A numerical example illustrates the theory. Computer simulation has been
used to show the linearity of the derived system.
