Abstract

- The ability of the eye to change its focus from distant to near objects (and vice versa). This process
is achieved by the lens changing its shape, and a accommodation is the adjustment of the optics of the eye to
keep an object in focus on the retina as its distance from the eye varies. It is the process of adjusting the focal
length of a lens.
A focimeter is one of the basic clinical instruments used in every optometric practice, and verification of the
accuracy and calibration of the instrument are of the utmost importance. Calibration is accomplished using
special test lenses. These lenses must be of high quality and of nominal ophthalmic power that is known with
high accuracy. A range of varifocal lenses (convex and concave lenses) were used. Two types of focimeters
were used: a manual focimeter, and a computerised focimeter (standard) was used as a reference for the
focimeters.
